About our program:
Here at Plato Academy Largo, our PE program will be a comprehensive package of curricula based on physical fitness training & conditioning, skill development, and sport introduction & practice. We are also responsible for teaching Health to our 7th graders, which is held in a middle school classroom on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday's throughout the school year.
Physical fitness & conditioning will be composed of weekly endurance walk/jog/run challenges called "Mileage Monday" where students will be given running challenges or tasks. (Challenges will be scaled for each grade level, as they are for all activities when necessary.) Students will learn and practice a variety of exercises and be requested to participate in our weekly Wednesday workouts that will be based on improving functional fitness, strength, balance, and agility. And finally, this portion of our program will include fitness testing conducted near the end of the fall semester modeled similarly to the Presidential Physical Fitness Program. Also, in the spring semester, we host a PE Olympic competition that provides additional incentives for our students to work hard during our weekly training and instruction.
Skill development is another important aspect of our program that will include developing and improving skills in a variety of different team sports and sports-related activities. Some of the sports we will be covering include soccer, flag football, basketball, softball, volleyball, hockey, and even an introduction to varying world & international games, like handball and badminton! Many of these activities will come from lessons found in the SPARK Academy PE curriculum, but we will also be using our own collective backgrounds as coaches and athletes to incorporate additional drills and exercises that will help improve our students’ physical abilities.
